Mackerel fondly called Bangda in the vibrant kitchens of Goa is my all-time favorite fish. As a child, I eagerly watched my grandmother prepare the most delicious Goan Mackerel Fry, infusing each step with tradition and love. The aromas that filled our home as she fried the marinated pieces of fish till golden brown is a memory etched in my mind forever. And, I was always served the first fried fish.

As I reminisce on my childhood memories join me on the journey to create an authentic Goan Mackerel Fry recipe in your kitchen!!!

Goan Mackerel Fry Recipe

Goan Mackerel Fry Recipe Ingredients

  • Fresh cleaned Mackerel

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • 1 tablespoon turmeric

  • 1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste

  • 2 tablespoons kokum or lemon juice

  • Semolina (rava) to coat the fish

  • Cooking oil

  • Salt

Marinating the Mackerel

  1. Begin by cleaning the Mackerel. Make sure it is thoroughly washed and drained.

  2. Add chili powder, turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste, salt, kokum, or lemon juice in a bowl until the mixture is consistent.

  3. Rub the marinade generously over the mackerel on both sides. Allow the fish to marinade for at least 30 minutes.

Coating and Frying

  1. Coat the marinated Mackerel Pieces with semolina (rava) evenly.

  2. Heat oil in a frying pan over a medium flame. Once the oil is hot enough, carefully add the mackerel pieces to the pan.

  3. Fry the mackerel until golden brown and crispy on both sides, flipping them halfway through the cooking process. This usually takes about 5-6 minutes per side, depending on the thickness of the fish.
